What is Hallux Rigidus?

Hallux rigidus is a disorder of the joint at the base of the big toe (hallux). The joint becomes painful and progressively stiff. It is normally associated with degenerative osteoarthritis.

Symptoms

Symptoms include reduced range of movement of the 1st metatarso-phalangeal joint (the joint at the base of the big toe) and pain when moving the joint. The pain can increase in cold weather.

Treatments

• A common treatment is the use of rocker sole footwear adaptations which enable an individual to walk whilst requiring less movement of the 1st MTP joint

• Functional foot orthotics with a specific adaptation to improve the available range in the 1st MTP joint when loading it can be helpful.
