What is Orthotics?

Orthotics is a specialist field allied to medicine which focuses on the design, production and use of orthoses.

The Orthotics Service

From an initial clinical assessment by one of our HCPC registered Orthotists through to the production and maintenance of an orthosis by our NVQ qualified technicians, our orthotics service is there for patients from start to finish:

Biomechanical Assessment

Static – This is an assessment of the body when not in motion and can be either weight bearing or non-weight bearing. It allows the Orthotist to observe any unusual joint positions and check for muscle strength.

Dynamic – This is a weight bearing assessment of the body whilst in motion and allows the Orthotist to observe whether there are any unusual joint positions or motions during gait.

Orthosis Design

Using the skills of our Orthotists and technicians we utilise the most advanced materials to ensure the most appropriate products are created.

Orthosis Fitting

We ensure that our orthoses are accurate in fit and provide the highest levels of function, comfort and appearance.

Repairs and Aftercare

We have pride in the provision of our Orthotics service and ensure that you have access to efficient and effective repairs and aftercare.

What Orthoses Do

Orthoses come in many different types.  Examples can be seen on our products page.  They provide help to the body by:

Assisting Joint Motion

When there is muscle weakness

Resisting Joint Motion

When the movement of a joint creates pain or instability

Relieving Weight

To reduce pain within weight bearing areas of the body

Preventing Deformities

To help provide control of joints to prevent deformities that can occur from progressive conditions

Accommodating Deformities

To provide accommodation of deformities which may either create pain and discomfort or the possibility of the deformity becoming progressively worse

Improve Body Mechanics

Using forces from orthoses to provide improved biomechanics when standing, walking or taking part in sport
