Conditions

Cerebral Palsy (CP) – Foot and Ankle

What is it?

Cause: CP occurs when there is damage to the developing brain. The damage can occur before, during or after birth and CP can affect people in many different ways. Causes of CP can be complex but include: Abnormal brain development, a bleed in the brain, oxygen starvation to the brain, an infection in early pregnancy.

Symptoms

CP is a condition which has a very varied and complex presentation and so the symptoms associated with it can vary significantly. In its mildest form it may affect the ability to move or control part of an individual limb (arm or leg) and at its most severe it may affect the body as a whole (all limbs, trunk and head) and even a person’s ability to speak.

Treatments

Foot and Ankle treatment will depend on the severity of the condition and the controlling forces which are required to position the foot and ankle in a good alignment. Types of Orthoses include:

Supra Malleolar Orthoses

Fixed ankle AFO’s

Jointed AFO’s

Tone inhibiting AFO’s

Ground Reaction AFO’s
