Orthotics (commonly referred to by members of the public as Surgical Appliances) is a specialist field of medical provision though our sister profession of Prosthetics (artificial limbs) is more commonly recognized.
Orthotics is involved with the provision of various external devices (called Orthoses) which are designed to assist the user in their daily lives. Depending on the nature of the problem the device (Orthosis) can correct or prevent a deformity or may be designed to accommodate a problem eg made to measure footwear for people with rheumatoid arthritis. In all instances the Orthosis is aimed at improving function and reducing symptoms associated with the problem in an individual. An Orthosis can be applied to any area of the body.
The specialist clinician (Orthotist) works within the Hospital in clinics called Orthotic Clinics. Here he/she will see patients who have been referred by Consultants, GP's and other therapists who feel that an Orthosis is an appropriate method of treatment for a particular patient. The Orthotist may be employed directly by the Hospital or ,as in the case of Crispin Orthotics, by a private company who provide the service under a contract with the Hospital. It is the Orthotists job to assess each patients individual needs and to design an Orthotic treatment plan to best meet those needs.
Though working mainly in the NHS, Orthotists also see patients privately, following an appropriate referral. This consultation will usually take place in designated consulting rooms, in the case of Crispin Orthotics these are located within our manufacturing facility.
