Common Knee
Conditions

Cerebral Palsy (CP) Knee

What is it?

CP occurs when there is damage to the developing brain. The damage can occur before, during or after birth and CP can affect people in many different ways. Causes of CP can be complex but include: Abnormal brain development, a bleed in the brain, oxygen starvation to the brain, an infection in early pregnancy.

Symptoms

CP is a condition which has a very varied and complex presentation and so the symptoms associated with it can vary significantly. In it’s mildest form it may affect the ability to move or control part of an individual limb (arm or leg) and at its most severe it may affect the body as a whole (all limbs, trunk and head) and even a persons ability to speak.

Treatments

The knee joint will not normally be affected on its own. It is usual that the foot and ankle will also be affected. Orthotic treatment will therefore be required to realign the knee, foot and ankle biomechanics and will require the use of:

• Ground Reaction AFO (GRAFO)

Knee Ankle Foot Orthosis (KAFO)
