Cartilage Injury

What is it?

The semi circular or meniscus cartilages in the knee provide cushioning between the femur (thigh bone) and tibia (shin bone) as they move relative to each other. If the knee is subject to a forceful twisting action, typically in sports such as football or rugby, then the cartilages can be nipped or torn.

Symptoms

Symptoms will typically include pain, swelling and “locking” of the knee. Sometimes the knee will feel to “give way”

Treatments

If surgery is not required, or as a treatment after surgery the following orthoses can be useful:

pull on elasticated/neoprene knee support may be helpful in providing compression to the knee joint to aid healing.

hinged knee support where more structural control is needed.
