What is it?

Pes Cavus is characterised by a high arch foot type which doesn’t flatten on weight bearing. It may be a normal variant (some people just have it); it may be hereditary or may be related to an underlying neurological problem.

Symptoms

Due to the foot shape there may be callous formed under the 1st and 5th metatarsal heads (the inner and outer edge of the ball of the foot). Feet will feel stiffer and less mobile. The increased loading on the ball of the foot may lead to metatarsalgia. There may also be pain in the medial arch of the foot as well as anterior knee pain

Treatment

Functional Foot Orthotics can improve foot biomechanics, often with the inclusion of a slight heel elevation to accommodate the natural heel/sole differential associated with this foot type. The use of specifically placed shock absorbent materials may be beneficial. • Total Contact Insoles to redistribute the pressures underneath the foot may also be appropriate.
